@Hylebos thanks. So the author does this kind of self referal a lot?
Precisely that kind of self referral? I don't think so. At least, I don't recall him regularly referring to his past self by saying things like: "You seriously couldn’t at least exercise a little restraint, past me?". However he does refer to his "past self" from time to time, and his narration is quite playful in the right moment, so I wouldn't say it's out of character either.
Narrating in the first person? Yes, frequently. Like many light novels it is usually written as if the protagonist is reciting or narrating the tale from either the present as a sort of internal monologue or from an unspecified future either recounting it or narrating it from his perspective.
It basically switches between narrating the story from the perspective of the time it is happening (but mostly written in past tense) to giving you his internal thoughts at that time to providing insight from the future. I think this is a style quite common in light novels, where first and third person and past and present tense can intermingle, and is something I've gotten so used to I hardly ever think about it.
I have read that Japanese does not have part/present verb tense (although there is indication as to whether or not an action has been completed) which could be relevant to decisions on how light novels are written in Japanese and thus translated into English.
