Probably, though I've never hear anything about it. I also rarely proselytize or share, which may be why don't hear anything. But non-understanding goes both ways.
For example I don't get murder mystery TV shows, yet my parents watch them all the time. While I also watched them growing up it never stuck with me. The show can basically be summed up as somebody dies, sophistry happens, and somebody is made a scapegoat (the killer, probably).
Even within anime the anime community there's stuff I simply don't get. As an example there is the attraction to shounen series and inevitable using particular shounen series as a metric for other shows to live up to. To me it's mostly just people yelling at each other at the top of their lungs. And a lot of time spent on recap of what was yelled in previous episodes. While there is some action/adventure thrown in there, I find the action weak and too little adventure for the amount of time spent on so little action.
Oh and then there's Re:Zero, a series that wasted an hour of my life on a MC who forgot he had a brain. Ok, technically it was only ep 1A & 1B when he completely lacked a brain, but even in ep 2 he only acquired a brain when he was forced to sit down and wait. Though it's apparently an epic, high-quality story and deconstruction (which seems to imply that its good or something) and anyone who doesn't agree must be an idiot or moron, at least that's what I've gathered from reading the hype around the series. I otherwise don't care about it, I also didn't get past episode 2, and while I figured the MC would continue to use his brain, the series had convinced me that I should select myself out of the audience.
Related to this, I rarely take unsolicited recommendations from others. I may look into it a bit, but my limited glance is so I can better understand the person giving me the recommendation (mostly what I end up learning is that their taste sucks). I rarely, actually get something I independently enjoy out of it.
So in answer to your question. I'm pretty sure it's simply a matter of being human, and also why marketing takes so many different forms. I guess I'll end with this question: Why watch a movie when it has a novel adaptation that can be read?
