I see a bit of a development contradiction with Mikhail’s character. Up to this point he seems complete repentant and is finally able to put himself in Ryoma’s and Helena’s shoes. Following this, it seems it would be more in line with his new mindset to act with sadness and regret to see Ryoma and Helena together, saying something like “I see, so you two really have been conspiring. To the very end the consequences of my arrogance come back to haunt me.”

Good grief, these volumes are always so short...
Anyway, looks like we finally have some antagonists that are actually a threat to Abel. And after the teasing in the previous volumes, our protagonist got his first girlfriend...the first of many, I suspect.

The tankrantula is definitely something that should become the protagonist of a Z movie produced by Asylum.

It's nice to see that Akira is becoming stronger and stronger and he even managed to achieve something on its own.

Overall, another nice volume for this series.

This is really one of the most unusal romance LNs I've read despite not having any other gimmick besides romance and the titular familial situation. It's the way the series delves into what people are thinking, what they're feeling, that gets me. That and the way it doesn't have a single protagonist, but switches viewpoint between the two of them, and often a lot of others too.

The other volumes were already very open about young people having all kinds of feelings, impulses and desires; this volume takes it quite a bit further, and at times stops, I'd say, just short of being erotica - while never being just that, because it's always also about people dealing with the complexity of their feelings and relationships. I think, at this point, it might be comparable to Scum's Wish - yes, there's young people having intimacy and sex, but it also serves the story foremost, and it's often obvious that the characters don't really know what they're doing, and what they're doing might be a mistake anyway.

This volume was a bit slower that the series usual; but even when not that much happens, we get to see the thoughts and emotions of the characters, which makes a lot of difference from just stalling, because there's always development, just not a physical one.

@Terabyte I just saw that the Japanese novel for volume 9 releases on January 10, 2024 and since volume 8 released back in the summer and it took about 6 months for that to be fully translated I'd assume about same time frame so we won't get volume 9 until mid-summer 2024

Having read the manga until this very point, the ending didn't come as a surprise. I look forward to what the author has done in the next 3 volumes. 😋

Go tournament was interesting to me, primarily for how the freak's games are structured. As noted, he played second and without komi. Also as noted, komi is a relatively new addition to the game; while it's origins track to the 1920s, the current values of 6.5 or better are roughly 2 decades in age.

As to why I find this interesting, it's mainly an artifact of reading 8 immediately after 7. As the translation notes (which I find to be of immense value, so thank you for providing them) there indicated, our setting is most likely historical pseudo-china. Given that, I would assume that the relatively modern invention of komi would likewise be excluded, but clearly that isn't the case.
