It seems like Ash is literally the phoenix god… as created by the ancient civilization’s nanotech. His recovery from the bear and werewolf attacks weren’t just luck and constitution but nanotech assists. The demons being tech means that the mysterious voices and vision were transmissions. All of which means that installing friendlies into the 2 enemy domains may or may not be necessary if they’re about to blow their whole society up. Although the author’s post scripts mostly makes it seem like that won’t happen? Genre whiplash.

So many POVs, it’s like game of thrones. 3rd volume, so a pattern emerges: Ash will play Cupid or be instrumental in a pair coupling up, he will be nearly killed during a foolhardy feat of derringer do, one more girl falls in deep but unrequited love with Ash, and people will fall over themselves fawning over him. It sits pretty squarely in harry sue territory. It’d be great if even one person discovered something first even if by research. Or, people start specializing so that he’s not the font of all innovation. It’d be nice if Hermes actually was the subject matter expert on flight. Speaking of specialties, Maika is supposed to be our warrior to our pasty and spindly librarian, but Ash goes all action hero and takes out 5.5 assassins all by himself. George didn’t even get there to help him with the last 3.

I appreciate that the womenfolk are not fighting over Ash, although it’s a little River Song in as much as they are both not expecting the sunset to admire them back.

Ignoring his family duties is problematic to me. He needs to move them to the city or send more help than the occasional piece of equipment. He’s already noted a couple of times how rough and short life is in this world and especially in a farming village.

I read through it when it was on catch-up here a year or two ago. It did feel a bit like it was rehashing things or like the author was stretching to find new powers to give new girls in the middle... But it did have a satisfying ending arc, and I think it was worth the read in the end.

Popping in on catchup, not reading the entire forum… Ash is reincarnated from a world with telepathy. What killed him? When he thinks about it it doesn’t seem like he died of old age… no one seems worried that Ash will become a werewolf himself despite being scratched and bitten. Not that kind of werewolf I guess. This volume goes full rashomon with 3 pov characters (and 1 extra single chapter pov). Arthur says a lot about agreeing with how Maika feels about Ash, multiple times before Maika fully declares love. Do they still agree? Also, are they actually trans or just a political refugee? Based on internal narration it seems like the latter. Wow, I thought soap was easier to make than that. Maika is going to seize power and then let Ash run roughshod over the whole county (province?), whee!

Following some internal discussions, we on the translation team will be making a few changes based on reader feedback, specifically relating to our decision to name an item "Ifrit." At the time of naming, the translation team hadn't been aware of an event that occurs involving this item that may have repercussions later on. As freelancers with multiple clients and projects, reading ahead in a story is rarely possible, so you can imagine our surprise when we found out about this event!

Anyway, said event was brought to our attention and discussions were had, and the following was decided - we will be changing "Ifrit" to "Zaien" in an effort to avoid issues later in the series. Additionally, "Juggernaut," a similar item that was named in a similar fashion, will be changed to "Hasai" in order to maintain consistency with naming conventions and characterization. We plan to stick to this style of naming as we go forward, so hopefully we don't run into situations like this again. Thank you so much for your feedback, we really appreciate it!

These little vignettes were awesome, definitely worth the read. We even get to see a couple other girls at school becoming interested in Yotsuba, sort of. She probably is going to wind up with a full on harem eventually, isn't she?

Final volume of the original Fujimi Shobo (1994-2003) series, although TO BOOKS did later take over the franchise and began the sequel in 2011 (which they released volume 12 of in 2021).

@Nunuhaza-0 I kind of doubt it. It felt to me like the author was stretching it to pad out the second volume. It felt like it was a complete story in a volume and a half and the editor made them add stuff to the beginning of the second volume to fill it in. Not that the side stories weren't pretty fun, just it felt weird placed like that.

This is pretty much the only Slayers novel volume I've read here where I've gone in 80% blind, not really knowing what to expect. Enjoyed it immensely. Thank you very much! :D
