I would normally consider Esmerelda the most self-absorbed of our usual cast of characters. It was great to see how much self-reflection she's gained through her time with Mia. Her stopping the carriage to run out into a field to apologize for her past mistakes is a wonderful example of how she too has grown and changed.

@xdrfiredogx It's interesting because the flashbacks show that Mia always had a good nature, even during the previous timeline. But the combination of ignorance and culture shrouded this good nature and turned her into a useless brat. Ludwig's education fixed the useless part and her experiences fixed the brat part.
That honestly might have been the moment that I knew that this wasn't just a series I really liked but one that I loved, when we first really see that she was ALWAYS a good person inside, but upbringing and circumstances had left that part of her buried until it was too late. Because it showed that she didn't just magically become a good person from fear or out of selfishness - no matter what our narrator likes to say - which in turn makes everything and everyone that changes more believable.
It fits in perfectly with this being, in many ways, a Christian fable as well so it's not shocking I guess, but it's appreciated just the same.
