[SPOTLIGHT] Make Your Pitch!!!
-
The Idea:
Taking @myskaros idea from a previous post, these spotlights will hopefully generate discussion for less popular topics in order to draw attention to them and maybe get people to vote for them. I hope these spotlights will help people consider a series they might otherwise have skipped over. The Reason:
There are just so many requests for series now that it's overwhelming, especially for newcomers, and a lot of series are kinda forgotten about once they've been made for a while and some requests need help in promoting a title, especially if there wasn't much information provided. Which is where these spotlights come in: to generate interest again.Spotlights:
If this ends up going somewhere, every week or every other week I'll change the topic and the spotlighted titles. To keep it simple, I'll only include 5 or so each time. Since these are meant to promote less popular series, I will avoid those topics that have a lot of votes like those in the top 10-15 spots. For this first spotlight, I randomly chose 6 series with anime adaptations to hopefully get the most people wanting to take part. Possible future spotlights could also be based on genre or publisher. I could also create polls to get ideas on what series to spotlight.
Make Your Pitch:
So, if you want a particular series to get people's votes and potentially get licensed, promote the hell out of it! Make your pitch: why do you like it, why should people read it, why should it be licensed, what about it could make it sell well?Click on the series' links below and start pitching!
I hope this encourages enough people to generate discussion. Let me know your thoughts on these spotlights as well as any suggestions for future ones.

Thanks for taking the reins, I was planning to write something up but got distracted by other things :o

This post is deleted! -
@sinnoaria Yeah, I understand. Full Metal Panic is a series dropped by Tokyopop in the past but what with it having a sequel this past year, if enough people keep clamoring for it, it may stand a chance of being saved from licensing hell. You never know.
-
Of these, I definitely want Sakurako (or the new title by that author). Not too much to say about it; watched the anime, thought it was decent, like the idea of an adult detective and a Shounen male protag solving cases (and hopefully the Shounen character growing over the course of the books).
I heard something about mysteries not being good sellers / a good market for JNC though? I kind of understand, especially one whose developments are kind of inconsequential book to book like a lot of the crime case detective type stories, a major enemy for them not really developing until later in the anime. Of course, maybe the books have more major developments linking them together, something that keeps you reading it, idk.

For spotlights I think some good things to keep in mind is how recent is the discussion and comments are and has the up-votes plateaued. Is the most recent comment 2 days ago or is it 2 months ago? Has it stayed in the first up-vote hurdle range or has it been steadily gained up-votes? I think these are some things that should be kept in mind.
-
@drone205 Good point. How should we treat them then-show preference to those that have not had any activity recently or those that have? Looking at the Pet Girl of Sakurasou one for example, that had no discussion whatsoever since the guy posted it 7 days ago; would that make it an ideal topic to spotlight, or one to ignore?
-
@hyperion maybe 14 days post with 0 comments for spotlight material? I would say there are about 3 states of a request. The initial state where it is new and ppl start seeing it and upvoting or discussing, the wall or hurdle state where the discussion and the up-votes have stopped (the first hurdle stage I find is around 8-16 ish votes) maybe we should call this state the dead state? The last state is the live state where the request is steadly gaining up-votes or discussion.
I think the spotlight should focus on these "dead" requests.

I thought of a sort of algorithm that could decide witch series would get a spotlight. Here are the variables:
T(V) - time in month as so if the time was like 14 or 15 days then time would be ~ 1/2 or 0.5. After "T" there will brackets with a point where we set set the time from ex T(activity) is since last comment or post, this means if the last comment was 2 months ago this would equal 2
P - points or just the amount of up-votes a suggestion has.
So here it is.
T(activity) * T(original post)/P
So if lady comment was 3 months and has 15 up-votes with the OP being 5 months old then it would look like
3 * 5/15 = 1points
If this goes another month with no change it would be4*6/15 = 24/15 = 8/5 = 1.6
The spotlight will be on stuff with higher points
-
@drone205 also would help if someone commented on the spotlighted stuff so this would not mess with the algorithm and will attract ppl as it would have new activity.
-
@drone205 I like the idea but man that's a lot a work. Especially now that we have hundreds of requests. How about going highlighting those with the least votes first and make our way up? A lot of those will have the higher points according to your algorithm anyway.
-
@hyperion not the least votes first, at least do the ratio of votes to age. my algorithm is basicly time since active divide by the ratio of up-vote to how old the post is. Why not just use the up-votes to age ratio as you can have 2 series with 15 votes but series A is 3 months old while series B is 5 months old.
Series A would be 15/3 = 5
Series B would be 15/5 = 3
In this case you would spotlight series B as it is lower (I perposly made my algorithm earlier to be the higher point wise the more priority it gets but now with this simpler algorithm it would be the lower).
-
@drone205 That makes sense. Should we try another round of spotlights then and see if anything comes of it?
How about these? They're older posts, no one has commented on them for months and they all have fewer than 20 votes.

@hyperion though I think posting a comment on the spotlight series would be a good idea as then it will get more people checking them out directly.

Time for another round of spotlights!
